Public Speaking for money!

Public speaking, can involve many differing industries. From sales, teaching, politics, entertainment, public office, religion and many many more. As a professional speaker myself, I have chosen the field of Keynote speaking and training in Personal development, Motivation and Goal setting. I chose this medium because it gives me an opportunity to help change peoples lives for the better, and to benefit financially from a 53 billion dollar per annum industry. Knowing where to start to make money as a public speaker is important, and you can do no better than to get advice and training from some of the worlds wealthiest public speakers. I learned so much from people like Bill Gove and Steve Siebold. Jim Cathcart, Les Brown, (pictured) Bob Proctor, Steven Covey, Keith Harrell, Randy Gage and many more. Each of these speakers are at the peak of their professions with millions of dollars earned in respect of years of profitable speaking engagements. All of these speakers had to begin somewhere; had to stand up on the platform for the very first time and speak to an audience. I was the same, nervous, unsure, and yet feeling an emotion of excitement of doing what I really wanted to do. I was achieving a goal, living a dream.
I came to public speaking by way of the theatre and movies having studied and worked as an actor for around twenty years. I soon learned that being a credible speaker is not helped by the ‘performance’ of acting, it is in fact the very art of being naturalistic and human that gives the pro speaker an edge over people who ‘perform’ their speeches. This vital and incredibly powerful knowledge came to me when I attended the Bill Gove/ Steve Siebold speech workshop. Like nearly all the other pro speakers I have mentioned in this article I learned the craft of pro speaking from Bill Gove. I had become a member of ‘Toastmasters International in the town I lived in (Galway)and found it an incredibly useful place to practice speeches without fear of appearing foolish.
Nearly all successful public speakers have been, or still are members of a Toastmasters club in their areas. However when a person has a goal to become a professional paid speaker there is a dramatic raising of the bar to be experienced and the old traditional, amateur and seemingly archiac guidlines of Toastmasters International have to be left behind. This is not in any way derogitive of such a powerful and valuable organisation, just a truthful opinion of many full time millionaire speakers. It is an opinion I share, but would add the suggestion that Toastmasters is a great way to get started as a speaker, plus it provides a friendly social outlet for many many people.
For those who seek a career as a public speaker whether in sales, keynotes, or training seminars, I would suggest getting the best training you possibly can. If you can’t afford a speech workshop, then find some of the excellent DVD products on public speaking. These can be found on ebay. Or you could check out the many youtube videos featuring some of the worlds greatest speakers. Better still you can get some of the greatest information on overcoming fear, and developing your skill as a public speaker by purchasing my book entitled ‘Keynote Presentation’ The art of public speaking for money. If you are not sure of how you think you will progress as a speaker then here is another tip.
Write yourself a short five minute speech and practice it when you are alone. Record it if you can, either in audio or better still video. A video recording of your short speech will show you as others see and hear you. This can sometimes be off putting at times but persevere, and improve anything you feel is uncomplimentary in your presentation. Posture, jestures, dress, voice, and irritating physical distractions will all show up in a video recording. Work on this until you are happy with what you see. If you are happy enough to present yourself and your message then others will be happy to listen. (More later)
